Leica Geosystems solutions for CSI

According to the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), “Crime scene investigators document the crime scene. They take photographs and physical measurements of the scene, identify and collect forensic evidence, and maintain the proper chain of custody of that evidence. Crime scene investigators collect evidence such as fingerprints, footprints, tire tracks, blood and other body fluids, hairs, fibres and fire debris.”

Leica Geosystems has been at the forefront of technologies for crime scene investigations. Whatever the specific needs today’s investigatory strategies have entered the digital domain. Agencies in first-world countries avail themselves of Lieca’s RTC360 laser scanner and Map360 software often described as the ‘forensic digital twin’ to create a digital 3D representation of the real scene. This offers a major advantage to CSIs as it means there is always original data to refer to as the investigation progresses. In the early stages of an investigation, assigned personnel can’t always be sure of which details may be important. Having clear, documented, digitized data of all evidence is a plus.

Leica Geosystems solutions help this process in:

  • Getting detailed 3D reality capture
  • Measure and annotate a 3D model of the scene
  • Allow for faster clearing of the crime scene without missing or compromising crucial evidence
  • Allow for reexamination of evidence as required.

According to Arrowhead forensics “The Leica RTC360 3D reality capture solution empowers you to document and capture your scenes in 3D, improving efficiency and productivity in the field and in the office through fast, simple-to-use, accurate, and portable hardware and software. The RTC360 solution efficiently combines the RTC360 high-performance 3D laser scanner, Leica Cyclone FIELD 360 mobile-device app for edge computing that automatically registers scans in real-time, and Leica Cyclone REGISTER 360 office software to integrate your 3D model seamlessly into your workflow.”
